Golden Gateway Comes Alive in an Unforgettable Mandela Day Celebration

SA Fasteners KZN and Durban Africa Sports Club created a day of joy, inclusion and lasting memories for special needs children

MAYVILLE, DURBAN – 30 July 2026

The Golden Gateway Special Needs School was transformed into a place of pure joy, laughter and celebration as SA Fasteners KZN (Pty) Ltd, in partnership with the Durban Africa Sports Club (DASC), hosted a spectacular Mandela Day Celebration that warmed hearts and brought countless smiles to the faces of special needs children and their families.

From the moment the festivities began at 09:00, the school grounds echoed with laughter, cheers and music as children eagerly participated in a fun-filled programme designed especially for them. The excitement was contagious as learners enthusiastically took part in a variety of sports activities, Agility, Balance and Coordination (ABC) games, singing, dancing and interactive fun, creating an atmosphere filled with happiness, energy and togetherness.

For many of the children, the day was far more than just an event—it was an opportunity to play freely, make new friends, celebrate their abilities and experience the joy of being included. Their radiant smiles, enthusiastic participation and infectious laughter were a powerful reminder that every child deserves opportunities to shine.

Parents and caregivers watched with pride and emotion as their children confidently embraced every activity.

The celebration strengthened family bonds while creating treasured memories that will be remembered for years to come.

Adding to the festive atmosphere was Michael John from Sunrise FM, whose live music and broadcast brought even greater excitement to the occasion, filling the venue with energy and sharing the spirit of Mandela Day with the wider community.

Every child received a delicious meal and a commemorative medal, ensuring they left not only with full hearts and happy memories but also with a lasting reminder that they are valued, appreciated and celebrated.

The event was made possible through the generous support of SA Fasteners KZN (Pty) Ltd, whose commitment to community upliftment and social responsibility continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with special needs.

Speaking after the event, organisers reflected on the true meaning of the day.

"Mandela Day is about giving hope, spreading kindness and making a positive difference in the lives of others. Today, we witnessed the incredible power of sport, play and compassion to build confidence, create belonging and bring happiness to every child. Their smiles were the greatest reward of all."

The celebration was a shining example of how partnerships between business, community organisations and dedicated volunteers can transform lives. More than simply marking Mandela Day, it celebrated the dignity, potential and uniqueness of every child, leaving behind a legacy of love, inclusion and hope that truly honours the spirit of Nelson Mandela.
